If you haven't been exposed to Haruhi's Japanese voice, you might as well watch the Dub I suppose. However, if you have been exposed. Watch the sub, because you'll notice right away that Haruhi's Dub voice is terrible.

I think that Hirano Aya is probably the biggest part and point of watching Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - hence the seiyuu and hence the whole lucky star continuum thing. That's probably more of an "insider" "otaku" thing anyway, so not picking up on nor being a Hirano fanboy isn't a problem. Wendy Lee trying to sing "God Bless" was also pretty painful

But Bandai did the same joke of the consistancy.
I have seen a few episodes dubbed and the dub is good, but for once, I prefer the sub, Kyon and Haruhi are so good in Japan.

Dub was pretty good, sub was great.

Haruhi was a bit too "spunky" in much of the dub, and Kyon took on a whining, sing-song tone of voice a few times.

That and Mikuru's screams weren't nearly as delightful when the English VA did them.

A good part of Haruhi's success is the excellent voicing. The dub completely falls flat on that front.

Im sorry, but no matter how many dubs wendee lee has done, she can't possibly beat aya hirano at haruhi.
through in tomokazu sugita and gotou...

ya, they tried to find the best dubbers out there for it, but i swear, haruhi's role was made for aya hirano.

and ya, wendee lee cant sing. that was horribly painful. well, hirano cant really sing either, but the japanese are much better at sound editing. just go youtube hirano's live of bouken desho desho - it was only good for its significance.

The dub and sub are both great in my opinion, but when it comes time for the "Live Alive" episode (12?) be sure you watch the sub because of some songs that get translated in the dub version.

^ That being one of the reasons why I always watch subbed stuff than dubbed.
Another one being, that American dubs are sometimes edited, some animes more than others.
By the way, I watched MHS fansubbed by A.F.K.

Wow. Am i the only one who prefers the Dubbed version?

I thought the Dubs (other then Mikuru) were good. Listening to Nagato's dub is funny cause she talks with a "yeah w/e" tone.

Haruhi, OMG, I laugh when they were in the computer club when she stole a computer.
i think this line was very funny (And i Quote):
Haruhi: (Episode 2) "Then I'll tell everybody all you geeks ganged up on he and f**ked her." Shows she can blackmail you every well so u wouldn't want to piss of Haruhi.
She being Very Outgoing and Unpredictable makes the show very funny.
Can't wait until Season 2 is out.

To be honest, I haven't watched the dub (after I started watching subs, I couldn't go back, Japanese seiyuu are just far superior to their Western counterparts) but I SERIOUSLY recommend the sub. The voice acting in Haruhi is possibly my favourite in any series so far, Haruhi and Kyon are voiced absolutely perfectly. In fact, Kyon's voice makes the show for me. You shouldn't miss out on that ^^

I actually liked the dub a lot. Wendee Lee sounded tremendously enthusiastic as Haruhi, Crispin Freeman completely nailed Kyon's role, Michelle Ruff got Yuki's deadpan voice right etc. etc.

One of the best dubs I've ever seen.

I can't stand to watch dubs after seeing a subbed version of something. It always feels awkward.

Also, Haruhi's voice is so well done that even if I usually watched dubs, I'd stick with subs for this one.

I saw a little bit of Episode 4 (Kyon) with the dub, and...

I wanted to SCREAM.

Kyon's voice was utter blah, Mikuru's voice was, well, not bad, but nothing special, but I absolutely hated Haruhi's dub voice. It was bratty, annoying, and an earsore. And I only heard dialogue, so I'd hate to imagine the dub versions of God Knows and Lost My Music.

So sub, hands down. Unlike with the dub, I loved all the original voices. Superb work.

for me, I actually prefer Dubbed. It's because I usually don't like to read many times and I usually just miss something that I would have to rewind a little bit. i did not think it was a bad dub, and do enjoy it. But that's just my opinion, since I don't judge in any ones own opinion. I do see Subs sometimes, btw.

it's really preference, whether you want to read the subtitles or go with English, I suppose.

I think a lot of it has to do with how one feels about Kyon's voice acting.

Admittedly, the dub has some issues. Mikuru's English voice is a bit hard to listen to, and Wendee Lee's rendition of the songs from Live Alive will of course never match that of the original seiyuu's.

Moreover, in general, I almost never prefer an English dub to the original Japanese.

With that said, I still far prefer the English voice acting to the Japanese original.

Two reasons:

1) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Crispin Freeman's take on Kyon. The dryness of his voice, and the ever-present hint of sarcasm, just makes my day. Half the reason I enjoy the show so much is the deadpan narration from Kyon. That, combined with the wackiness that ensues on-screen, really makes this show funny.
Kyon's Japanese voice actor seems to lack all of the personality that Freeman gave the character. It just doesn't seem to fit the character as well. I can hardly stand to watch the show in Japanese because I miss the English voice actor so much.

2) Wendee Lee might not be a great singer, but she really puts a ton of energy and personality into her role as Haruhi. The original seiyuu definitely has the 'better' voice, but Lee seems to give the character more life and personality.

I really have no preference for either one of Yuki's voice actresses, but I do also prefer Koizumi's english voice actor.

The English actors just did a GREAT JOB with this show, for the most part.

I hate the dub even though i love Wendee Lee and Crispin Freeman. It's just a lackluster dub! For one i cant stand Lee's voice for Haruhi, it is like nails on a chalkboard and the rest of the cast is just kinda bland.

Watch it subbed, it's the best that way! Aya Hirano and Sugita Tomokazu are fantastic!

Plus you know, there's singing and every time Japanese song gets dubbed in English, it's awful.

why is everyone so hell bent on the subbed version? i tried watching the first few episodes in subbed, and it damn near made my ears bleed... its not because i hate the voice acting or anything, but because ive developed a taste for american voice actors more than japanese... i have nothing against them, but to me, everyone sounds so much more whiny and grating on the ears in japan... Crispin Freeman gives Kyon not too deep of a voice, but low enough that all words are clear, precise, and brings a better feel to the inner monologues as well as his outward tone... same with pretty much everyone else... yes, singing has never been a strong point in any dubbed version of anything.. but how do you think youd sound trying to sing a song with words that dont translate well? not to mention i look at it in the perspective as just adding a bit more humor onto it because im sure most of you (me included) have done the epic face palm whenever a character does something royally embarrassing that you can relate to.. and through american voice acting, i get that great comedic feeling quite often, especially from this series, because i know people who actually sound like that or have done things like that... to me, it takes away the meaning when its subbed cause ive seen 7 different translations for just 1 anime before, so i feel stupid for not knowing which one is correct and since i cant understand what they are saying, i dont have anyone who sounds like that to relate it too which in turn pulls away my interest... lol im not trying to bash the subbed version, but reading how much people were bashing the dubbed version was a bit much, so i figured id level the playing field a bit.. dubbed all the way!

I agree with Hirano>Lee
However Freeman>>>>>>>>>Sugita
Besides, I never cared much for Haruhi. She had some funny moments but Kyon was what really made fall in love with the series. Crispin Freeman's natural monotone and quirky narration is what made the character for me. In comparison, Sugita makes him sound like a nerd who's trying too hard to deadpan. He's not a bad seiyuu but he's way too monotone and boring as Kyon. He lacks pretty much all of Freeman's charm.

Wendee Lee didn't capture Hirano's amazing pycho bitch Haruhi. But she still got the gist of her character. After all, as Johnny Yong Bosch said once, they're voice 'actors' not 'imitators'. Without the comparison to the sub, Wendee Lee did an amazing job. She's even a pretty good singer. Shame about the lyrics

I personally believed the Japanese was much better. Haruhi is way worse in English. I am a fan of his work but Mr. Freeman was horribly miscast as Kyon, he sounds way too old. Mikuru isn't quite there either but she can be difficult to replicate. Nagato is okay. Itsuki's English dub is the only one I'd say is on par with his Japanese counterpart.

The sub and dub for this show are both amazing. I'm pretty darn well attached to the dub, at this point, since watching the entirety of the franchise in English last year (2013). But when it was brand new, I watched the first season with subs and loved it. But watching it in English really made me fall in love with the show, to the brink of obsession (i.e. I own all the light novels now).

It just comes down to taste, though. They're both amazing. And Haruhi is adorable in both of them, for the record. I actually went into the dub EXPECTING to hate Wendee Lee's portrayal, but I ended up loving it. Go figure.

I prefer the dub.

Tbh I managed to complete the entire series, including the tiresome Endless Eight arc, in the English dub. Back when I tried watching this in its original language years ago, I couldn't stay interested and subsequently dropped it after 2-3 episodes.

I think I understand why people tend to prefer the subs to the dub, even though I feel the way people degrade the dub is a bit over the top. A lot of people become accustomed to watching in its original language so when they tried watching it in English version, they find the dub horrible. Cos I find it the similar way. After being too used to watching this show in English dub, when I watch some of its clips in Japanese, I instantly stopped watching them, preferring the English version.

At the end of the day, it's up to your personal preference. But I feel it's completely unnecessary to over-criticize whichever version you don't prefer.
